attended veterinary school at Purdue University in the United States of America followed by two years in mixed practice in New England, USA. After this she completed an internship at a referral racehorse hospital in Ocala, Florida, USA, and then returned to the UK to complete an equine surgery residency at the University of Bristol. This was followed by time as a surgery lecturer at the University of Glasgow’s veterinary school in Scotland followed by holding the position of the University Equine Surgeon at the University of Cambridge, England. She then spent seven years in private practice as the surgeon at the Valley Equine Hospital in Lambourn, Berkshire, England, which had a hospital population of racehorses, performance horses and pleasure horses and is currently an external surgical consultant to multiple practices. She holds the RCVS certificate in Equine Surgery (Orthopedics), is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons, and is an RCVS and European recognized specialist in Equine Surgery. Her areas of interest are both soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, diagnostic imaging and investigation of lameness cases as well as neonatology and care of the pregnant mare. She is a keen motorcyclist and one of the original members of the Horsepower CPD team which has already raised over £980,000 for charities to provide ongoing funding for both working equids and disabled children.

Derek Knottenbelt

is a Diplomate of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine and of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and held a personal chair at the University of Liverpool, England, until his "retirement" in 2010. He was then a consultant professor at the University of Glasgow and currently runs Equine Medical Solutions (www.sarcoid.co.uk). Equine Medical Solutions Ltd. was founded in 2016, taking over the sarcoid referral service previously run through Leahurst at Liverpool Vet School. Equine Medical Solutions continue to provide support and advice to veterinarians on equine cancer cases, in particular sarcoids.

Derek has published a plethora of journal articles and something crazy like 12 textbooks. He received the Animal Health Trust Scientific Award in 2003, the BEVA Blue Cross Welfare Award in 2004, and received an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honors of 2005 for his services to Equine Medicine.   Derek founded Vets with Horsepower in 2009 and the first trip took place in 2010. His topics of interest include a wide range of equine medicine topics, with a special interest in dermatology and wounds, oncology, ophthalmology and neurology including headshakers but the list certainly is not limited to this!
