Philippe Benoit

graduated from Alfort Veterinary School in 1989 Paris, France. He did a Master in Exercise Physiology from 1990 to 1992 and was Team veterinarian of the French Jumping Team from 1992 to 1999, and in 2000 for the teams of Saudi Arabia and Brazil. He established a clinic next to Versailles (France) in 1993 and monitors since 2012 constantly show jumpers of clients in USA. His main interests are orthopedics, shoeing and back problems of horses. He became Diplomate of the American College of Sport Medicine and Rehabilitation in 2014 and is now living in Cardiff (CA – USA) practicing as a consultant with local veterinarians and a large show jumping facility.

 

Elizabeth Davidson

is an Associate Professor of Sports Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, New Bolton Center. She received her DVM from Michigan State University in 1992, and completed an equine internship at Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital in Snohomish, Washington and a surgical residency training at Penn’s New Bolton Center. She is Diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. Elizabeth has special interest and expertise in sport horse lameness, the “hard to diagnose” horse, and those horses affected with neck and back pain.  

 

Sue Dyson

graduated from Cambridge University, United Kingdom. She was Head of Clinical Orthopaedics at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, England for many years until 2019 and is now an independent consultant. She has a passion for the investigation of poor performance using a holistic approach to the horse, tack, rider triad to try to maximize potential. Sue has also ridden at top British level in Eventing and Show Jumping and has trained horses that have competed at the Olympics and World Championships.

 

Edwin Enzerink

graduated in 1996 as a veterinarian from the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands. Until 2000 he worked as a surgeon at the Department of Equine Sciences of the University Utrecht. Since 2000 he is qualified as Dutch Equine Surgeon Specialist, and since 2001 Edwin is boarded as a European Specialist Veterinary Surgeon (Dipl. ECVS). Since 2000 Edwin works at the Veterinary Centre in Someren, Netherlands. His special interests are arthroscopy and colic surgery. Besides his work as a veterinary surgeon, Edwin is specialized in orthopedic problems in show jumping and dressage horses. Since 2018 Edwin is Team veterinarian of Team Netherlands Dressage.

Zusatzinformationen:

Participants will see Philippe Benoit, Elizabeth Davidson and Edwin Enzerink working up lameness cases on day 1 of the course. The instructors will discuss their approaches, findings, diagnosis and treatment options as they present all cases together on day 2 with Sue Dyson moderating. Day 3 of the course will be devoted to performing further examinations on selected cases and to improve skills.

Practical work (Equine Clinic)

09:00-19:00 h: Clinical lameness examination, radiographic and ultrasonographic evaluation of lameness in horses.

Instructors: Philippe Benoit, Elizabeth Davidson, Edwin Enzerink

We will work on lameness cases at the equine clinic. The day will be divided into three sessions of 120 minutes each. In each of the sessions a new case is presented, but the group of participants changes (so the participants get an opportunity to experience each of the instructors); Horses will undergo routine clinical exam of each instructor (including diagnostic anesthesia as necessary), radiography, ultrasound, etc. Scintigraphy and magnetic resonance images of the horses will be available for some cases.

09:15     Presentation of all horses to be examined, including video recording of the examinations during a basic battery of gait tests (straight and circles at walk and trot, maybe the one or another special procedure of the instructors) before instructors examine the horses, so that the participants and instructors have an idea of what the movement of the horses looked like initially.

09:00      Follow-up examination of selected cases based on the discussion on day 2.

10:30   Coffee break

11:00   Wet labs to improve skills. Please select 2 of them: 1) Radiography; 2) Ultrasound; 3) local anesthesia (cadaver limbs); 4) objective and subjective gait analysis

13:00    Lunch

14:00    Continue wet labs

16:00   Final discussion of findings on horses examined today.

17:00   End
