This year’s theme, “The Influence of Podiatry on Horses” will highlight the essential role of hoof care in equine health and performance.
Look forward to lectures and practical insights from Dr. Jenny Hagen, farrier, veterinarian, and osteopath. Her unique interdisciplinary expertise promises valuable insights for all participants.
Experience two intensive days featuring a unique combination of theory, practical demonstrations, and interactive sessions:
The content of the meeting of the EVSO focus on two major aspects, in which latest scientific insights are connected to the everyday work at the equine patient.
At the first day to content focus on the motion physiology of horses. Neuroanatomical mechanisms of motoric learning and development of motoric memory are brought into context with the presence of individual motion pattern and training. Additionally, it will be explained how the motion quality of horses is correlated with the function of the neck, back, core stability of the trunk and the pelvis. The aim is to provide a basis for a functional assessment of horses with a lack of motion quality or poor performance. This aspect will be discussed further in the practical session by the evaluation of several horses. Finally, the effect of trimming and shoeing on the performance and motion quality will be explained to support a professional communication and interdisciplinary work with the farriers.
At the second day, the seminar focusses on the function of structures related to the distal limb and the functional rehabilitation of orthopaedic patient. The major interest will be on the causes and mechanical consequences of tendon injuries in horses. It is the goal to explain stages of healing and use this knowledge to give insights as a basis for the creation of a successful rehabilitation plan. Additionally, indications, use and side effects of orthopaedic shoe modifications will be described to provide a background for the optimal application of therapeutic shoes for each individual patient. In the practical part, these information will be used to discuss the management of patients with different orthopaedic disorders.
Day 1 – The Horse in Motion
- Movement physiology and motor learning in horses
- The correlation between the function of the upper musculoskeletal system and hoof conformation as well as gait qualit
- Influence of hoof preparation and shoeing on the horse's movement pattern
- Natural crookedness, laterality, and lameness – differentiation and influence on movement quality
- Uneven hooves – causes, consequences, and management
- Functional evaluation of the horse as a basis for creating a shoeing protocol and treatment or training plan
Day 2 – The Orthopedic Patient
- Functional anatomy and biomechanics of the distal limb – sectioning of structures relevant to practice
- Causes and mechanical consequences of tendon damage, orthopedic care, and functional rehabilitation
- Adapting orthopedic fittings to the patient's rehabilitation status – weighing up benefits, effects, and side effects
- Interactive discussion on the creation of fitting protocols for the treatment of selected orthopedic conditions
