This session discusses the disease processes that may lead to mechanical ventilation being indicated, due to failure of ventilation, failure of oxygenation, or both. Patient selection, including alternative respiratory therapies and the use of diagnostic tests, will be discussed. Monitoring of the ventilated patient, care of the ventilated patient, and how to determine if a patient is able to be liberated from ventilation will also be presented.
